Spine Surgery

Compassionate, team-based care is at the heart of what we do—our neurosurgeons and healthcare professionals are committed to every patient’s well-being. Whether through surgery or non-surgical care, our spine specialists focus on relieving pain and helping patients move freely again.

Spine surgery, also known as back surgery, is a surgical procedure performed on the spine to treat various conditions affecting the spinal column. The primary goals of spine surgery are to alleviate pain, improve spinal function, and stabilize the spine.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Our spine surgeons may recommend open (traditional) spine surgery, which involves an incision along the backbone, or minimally invasive spine surgery, which utilizes specialized instruments and smaller openings to minimize trauma to the muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues surrounding the spine.

The potential benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery include:

  • Reduced pain – Less tissue damage often translates to less post-operative pain.
  • Faster recovery – Patients typically recover faster and can return to normal activities sooner than with open surgery.
  • Less blood loss – Smaller incisions reduce the risk of significant blood loss during surgery.
  • Lower risk of infection – Smaller incisions may also lead to a lower risk of infection.
  • Improve cosmetic results – Smaller scars are often a desirable outcome for patients.

Our surgeons specialize in many types of spine surgery, including:

  • Spinal Decompression
  • Spinal Fusion
  • Cervical Decompression and Fusion
  • Vertebroplasty
  • Kyphoplasty

Open (Traditional) Spine Surgery

Open spine surgery may be necessary when minimal access is not sufficient. Compared to minimally invasive spine surgery, open spine surgery typically leads to larger incisions, more muscle disruption and a longer recovery time.

The choice between open spine surgery and minimally invasive surgery depends on the individual patient’s condition and the location and type of problem. Patients should discuss the benefits and risks of each approach with their surgeon to make an informed decision.

NOTE: Individual results vary. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks associated. Spine surgery may not be appropriate for all patients and all patients may not benefit.
